Horse Riding Lesson Information

First Lessons at Highland Stable

Riders are required to tack and untack their lesson horse. Instructors will assist newcomers to learn rules and safety procedures for grooming and tacking in the first package of lessons. The first 3 full lessons are dedicated to teaching the proper procedures for grooming, tacking and caring for horse. This part is extremely important to each rider’s growth and confidence. It establishes a bond for riders to understand the horse’s responses and needs.  Instructors will also teach dismounted lessons throughout the sessions where valuable horsemanship skills lead to well-rounded equestrians.

Private Lessons

Private Lessons are great for all riders eager to begin or improve their riding and horsemanship skills. We offer 30 and 60 minute private lessons. We recommend 60 minutes for all beginners until they are capable of independently grooming and tacking their horse as well as properly untacking.

Group Lessons

Group Lessons are an hour with 3-4 riders and great for those of similar ability levels. Groups are also a wonderful way to meet other horse loving friends.

Our Lesson Horses

We have lesson horses of various sizes and abilities to accommodate multiple levels of riders. Our horses keep the students challenged to prepare them for horse ownership. Due to size, age, and strength capabilities of our horses we have a rider’s weight limit of 180 pounds. Thank you for working with us to help keep our horses as comfortable as possible.

Riding Attire

For safety we require all of our students to ride in a proper riding boots with a heel and protective toe, and correctly fitted approved horseback riding helmet. We have helmets to borrow to get started but request getting your own helmet within the first session. All helmets fit differently, to ensure best fit please ask for assistance when you go to the tack shop. For comfort we recommend our students ride in a pair of well fitted breeches, or leggings. Loose fitting jeans, sweats, or other pants can cause knee rubs. We recommend that our students, especially our younger riders, wear riding gloves. Don’t hesitate to ask your instructor for advice when selecting riding attire.  See our list of local and online retailers of equestrian attire on the resources page.
